It’s getting drier around here. After the Rivanna Water and Sewer Authority (RWSA) declared a drought watch last week, area streams ran at only 18 percent of their normal level, down from 25 percent in mid-July (C-VILLE used poor wording last week that suggested levels were at 75 percent of normal—kudos to keen-eyed readers who caught the error). The drought watch is the first of three phases to alert citizens to drought conditions, calling for them to "voluntarily conserve water at every opportunity." In a July 18 report, RWSA said that "if rainfall doesn’t improve in the coming weeks, conditions could become severe this fall." Stay tuned for weekly updates on "Drought Watch ’07."
