A look back at Robert Cray’s career traces the bluesman working his way up as a student of masters before becoming a legendary musician himself. Inspired by Albert Collins, Freddie King, and Muddy Waters, Cray put his own group together and workshopped his style on the road throughout the ’80s. By the early ’90s, he was gigging alongside Eric Clapton and John Lee Hooker, and sharing the stage with Stevie Ray Vaughan at Vaughan’s final performance. In 2020, Cray cut ties with Clapton over Slowhand’s support of controversial lyrics around the COVID-19 lockdown.
