ACPS announces changes to preschool and K-5 afterschool programs for 2026-27 school year

As students celebrate the start of summer break, Albemarle County Public Schools is already looking ahead to next year with updates to programming for its youngest learners.

At the preschool level, early childhood special education programs currently housed at Stony Point Elementary will be moved to Baker-Butler Elementary. The change, per a May 26 release, will allow the county to expand access to preschool programming across the district.

“Bringing preschool classrooms together at larger program sites allows students to learn alongside more peers and gives schools greater access to specialized staff and support services,” said Craig Dommer, executive director of curriculum, assessment, and instruction, in the release. “It also creates more opportunities for collaboration among early childhood educators and supports inclusive learning environments for all students.”

Some K-5 students in the county will also see changes in 2026-27, with the centralization of the extended day enrichment program at Agnor Elementary and the expansion of afterschool options at Scottsville and Red Hill elementaries.
