Permaculture on your calendar

The glorious weekend we just had was proof that fall’s an excellent time to be in the garden. We did a bunch of planting of fall and winter crops, which meant reluctantly ripping out some of the summer stuff (goodbye, basil! thanks for the memories, cukes!). It was all kinds of cathartic.

Young brassicas!

Even if you’re not shepherding seedlings toward a stellar broccoli-producing career, you can be getting some education that’ll serve you well when spring rolls around again. It’s too late to sign up for the John Jeavons workshop in Dayton October 23-25, though it’s certainly worth keeping your eye on his website for other workshops in the future—the guy is a veritable encyclopedia of garden smarts, and the auther of this book, one of the classics of the organic grower’s library.

However, you might still squeeze into this course: Introduction to Permaculture, a three-day blizzard of knowledge from the folks who have been bringing permaculture to the Blue Ridge for several years now, the Blue Ridge Permaculture Network. It’ll happen October 31 through November 2. Sign up today. Seriously—today is the deadline given on the application form.

Permaculture, if you haven’t heard the term, is a systemic approach to making your home (house and land) sustainable. It integrates everything from gardening and water harvesting to community building, and it encourages you to closely observe your site. I took a one-day workshop from the Network earlier this year, and it was kind of mind-blowing.

What are all you organic gardeners doing in this season? Any other recommendations for events, workshops, etc.?
