Can Virginia really turn blue? Tim Kaine thinks so.
The Governor made an appearance on The Rachel Maddow Show on MSNBC last night, where he outlined his thoughts on the race.
”For Virginia to be a battleground state is pretty darn unusual. We haven’t really been in play for a very long time, but Senator Obama is doing quite well here,” he says. So well that the latest Mason/Dixon poll has Obama ahead of McCain 2 points, and Time Magazine has Obama ahead by 10 points.
“We feel like we’ve got a great chance,” said Kaine.
The Governor endorsed Obama one week after he got into the race back in February 2007. “He came to Richmond a week after he got into the race and he has been back often since,” said Kaine, who pointed out that Obama has visited the Commonwealth about 10 times, “compared to two or three for Senator McCain.”
What contributes to Obama’s success in Virginia? More than 40 offices around the state, grassroots efforts, ethusiasm and policies. “I think that [Obama] needs to do at the end is just drill down on the two issues that Virginia has cared deeply about,” said Kaine, the economy and national security.
