New Jersey has become the first state in more than four decades to abolish the death penalty, reports today’s Baltimore Sun. Thirty six states still allow executions, however, while 35 of them, including Virginia, use lethal injection. "Jerry Givens could be your next door neighbor. A gentle man from Richmond," an ABC News segment began that night. "For 17 years—from 1982-1999—he was a hired killer." As chief executioner of Virginia, Givens presided over 62 deaths but since fired has spoken out against lethal injection. "It’s a long process," Givens said, explaining that victims are first paralyzed with injections to mask the painful ordeal. "I would choose electrocution."
