The Charlottesville Police Department and Fire Marshal are investigating a suspected arson at the former Rivanna River encampment area. A September 2 surveillance video shows an individual lighting at least two tents on fire less than two hours after the city announced no one remained at the sites.
In a September 2 news release, officials announced the “transition” of the encampment was finished and 26 people completed intake at the Holiday Drive emergency shelter, but “cleanup [would continue] over the coming days.” The apparent arson occurred at 11:03pm, based on timestamps from security footage released by investigators.

Strong suit
In a September 4 decision, Albemarle County Circuit Court ruled former men’s lacrosse head coach Lars Tiffany can proceed with his suit against the University of Virginia.
Tiffany is seeking $1.4 million for breach of contract. Judge Cheryl Higgins tossed UVA’s bids for dismissal of the lawsuit.
During Tiffany’s time as head coach at UVA, the team achieved a 108-51 record and won two national championships.

Virginia Lt. Gov. Ghazala Hashmi will visit Charlottesville September 14 as part of her energy costs listening tour, discussing the proposed $67 million merger of Dominion Energy and NextEra. The merger is currently under consideration by the SCC, weighing worries including the acquisition’s effects on utility costs.
