The new budget plan is in—and it looks like good news for Albemarle County schools, which expected roughly $5.2 million more in cuts than they would receive under the approved proposal.
Last month, the county School Board proposed a budget that reduced employment by 22 teachers, reports the Daily Progress, and made cuts in technology spending. Albemarle was expecting $34.4 million in state funds; the proposed budget allows the county $43 million instead. This comes as somewhat of a relief, no doubt, to those who attended the recent Board of Supervisors hearing on the proposed county budget.
Still, says the Richmond Times Dispatch, the cuts mean $250 million less funding overall for public education. Next, the budget goes to Governor Bob McDonnell for approval.
