Although this news was expected, the U.S. Postal Service has announced officially that it will move all mail processing operations from the Charlottesville Processing and Distribution Facility to Richmond, specifically Sandston, VA.
According to a news release, as soon as the transition and the transfer are complete, the Charlottesville facility will close.
All affected employees will either be reassigned to the Richmond facility or to other positions that are vacant.
Richmond District Senior Plant Manager Edgar “Nat” Gramblin, Jr. said in the release that “given the drastic decline in mail volume the Postal Service has experienced, with a decline of 26 billion pieces this past year, we must take action to reduce the size of our mail processing network. Consolidating operations and placing our people where we need them is necessary if the Postal Service is to remain viable to provide mail service to the nation.”
Cathy Boule, Postal Service spokeswoman in Richmond, told C-VILLE that the move will begin in April.
