Last night, I went to Miller’s to catch a blues set by Jamie Dyer and Jamal Millner. When I arrived, the pair was nowhere in sight; the bartneder told me that Christian Breeden was playing, and that Dyer and Millner moved their set to Mono Loco. I thanked her, grabbed my notebook and was nearly ready to leave when a voice big as a blue plate special covered in Memphis gravy asked, "You writing your memoirs?"
I turned. And saw this man:
Elvis Roark performs "Trouble" and "Hound Dog" at Outback Lodge [Warning: Elvis of Charlottesville uses adult language]
To borrow from this Nailgun post, I didn’t know that Elvis of Charlottesville "actually Elvis-ed." (Or, for that matter, that he introduced himself as "The Elvis of Charlottesville." He does.) We talked a bit about his recent gig at the Garage; he performed three songs and took three cookies as payment, though he added "I’ve played for less." And that was that.
I did catch Dyer and Millner, by the way—they played a great cover of a tune by a group called Corb Lund and the Hurtin’ Albertans. But more on that next week. For now, any special memories of Elvis of Charlottesville you’d care to share? Take me to Graceland and leave ’em below.
