Littlepage says Groh won’t go

No matter what happens in the final two football games of the season, UVA Athletic Director Craig Littlepage is sticking by Head Coach Al Groh, according to the Richmond Times-Dispatch.

“Al Groh will be our head coach,” Littlepage told the paper via e-mail.

This weekend, UVA was beat 28-17 at Wake Forest. The Cavaliers (5-5, 3-3 ACC) have had a down-and-up-and-down season, losing three of the first four games, winning the next four, and now losing two in a row.

Groh, who has coached at his alma mater since 2001, had his contract extended until 2011 last year after going 9-4 and playing in the Gator Bowl against Texas Tech. The Times-Dispatch reports that it would take $5 million to buy Groh out.

Calls for Groh’s head grew intense after the team lost at Duke September 27, but faded completely after the Cavaliers knocked off Maryland, East Carolina and UNC, a team now ranked No. 17.

The Cavs have the week off to prepare for a visit from the struggling Clemson Tigers on November 22. They finish the regular season with a trip to Blacksburg to face Virginia Tech. UVA will have to win one of those games to qualify for a bowl.
