Well, it seems that the daffodils are blooming and, likewise, the calendar is growing thick and leafy with events. If you’re a green sort, you’re gonna get busy here in the next few weeks.
Numero uno: Joel Salatin speaks Saturday, 7-9pm at the Montessori Community School on Pantops. Everybody and their mother contacted me to promote this one, so I’m guessing it’ll be big—as though an appearance by the guru of locavorism and the owner of Polyface Farm weren’t big all on its own. Man has ideas larger than his cowboy hat, and that’s large. Call Terry Lilley at 293-3963 to register, and prepare to have your mind blown by someone who can claim to have influenced Michael Pollan.
And then there’s an event during the Festival of the Book where you can hear more about the tasty subject of local food, from local folks who know it from the inside out. I speak of Martha Stafford (Charlottesville Cooking School owner), Gail Hobbs-Page (Caromont Farm—you know, the awesome goat cheese), Megan Weary (Roundabout Farm), and Fran McManus, who edited the new book Cooking Fresh from the Mid-Atlantic. Stafford contributed recipes to the book, and the four panelists will be talkin’ local farms, simple food and why we need farmers. Check it out Saturday, March 21 at 4pm at the cooking school. I have to think there will be snacks.
OK, and then we have the UNICEF Tap Project the whole next week. You’ll be able to pay $1 for your glass of water at certain restaurants in town, March 22-28, and the money will go to clean water projects at home and in developing countries. Do it. And stop spraying water on the sidewalk.
What else…the last Green Matters workshop on March 25, 6-7:30 at the Habitat Store, where an impressive-sounding business owner from Vermont will hold forth on the subject of green building and being a good person even when you’re a capitalist. And…Design Week, March 27-April 3, where all you blueprint-readers will convene and put your pointy heads together about inventing a better world for the rest of us. (Godspeed with that.)
