Virginia fumbled away a 10 point lead Thursday afternoon in the opening round of the ACC Tournament as they lost to Miami 69-62 in overtime. The Hoos looked like they had never played on the big stage before, and they really have no one to blame but themselves for the loss. Embarrassing. Awful. A gut-wrenching loss.
Tony Bennett’s Hoos went on a 20-2 run in the second half, only to have Miami come all the way back to force overtime and to eventually win the game. Virginia tried to give Miami every chance to win the game late as the Hoos missed free throws, turned the ball over as they ran into their own teammates, and generally played like they could not wait to get back on the bus to return to Charlottesville.
Miami was led by Brooklyn native Malcolm Grant who scored 16 points on just 4/15 shooting. The Hurricanes only shot 39.5 % from the field, and were 10/29 from three-point land. Miami out-rebounded the Hoos 39-34.
Virginia was terrible at the line finishing just 8-16. The Wahoos weren’t much better from beyond the arch as they were only 6-16. Mustapha Farrakhan (in his last game for the Hoos) scored 14 points.
The Hoos finish their season a very disappointing 16-15, and once again for UVA fans we hear, "Wait till next year"…
