Spivey out on $50,000 bond

Judge Paul M. Peatross decided former Charlottesville High School Choir Director Jonathan Spivey, indicted on seven counts of sexual abuse while in a custodial role, is not a flight risk and granted him $50,000 bond on December 8. But, Spivey is barred from leaving the state, having direct or indirect contact with any of his alleged victims or being alone with his two underage children, ages 9 and 10.

It’s unlikely former CHS Choir Director Jonathan Spivey will flee sex charges, Judge Peatross decided at a bond hearing.

The judge also said Spivey would have to go through typical booking procedures and be DNA tested. Spivey was not arrested prior to his first court appearance and has had a lawyer since investigations began in September.

Looking disengaged, wearing a blue suit and yellow tie, Spivey spoke only to his lawyer, David Franzen. His wife was in the courtroom and nodded when the judge asked if she would sign a document to put up the couple’s Lake Monticello home as collateral for Spivey’s bond.

Spivey’s charges are for three incidents of sexual propositioning and four incidents of sexual contact with students he supervised at CHS, police have said. In court, Charlottesville Commonwealth’s Attorney Dave Chapman did not elaborate on the incidents that led to the charges.

Spivey’s next court date is set for December 18.
