South Lawn gets its skeleton

As of this weekend, Jefferson Park Avenue has the outline of the South Lawn stretching above it between West Main and Emmet streets. In the wee hours of Saturday morning, work crews lifted beams into place that will form the base for the South Lawn, a grassy pedestrian bridge that will connect New Cabell Hall to the new Arts & Sciences building (rising on the left). While crews lifted the beams, traffic was stopped in both directions on JPA—the timing was meant to coincide with a low-key weekend. “We originally had it scheduled for the weekend of the first football game,” says Jim Kelley, facilities management project director, “and somebody said, ‘Wah oh.’”
