The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers published a permit request for the Southgate extension of the controversial Mountain Valley Pipeline on April 30.
According to the notice, the natural gas pipeline is “subject to special emergency permitting procedures to address an energy supply situation” under a January executive order signed by President Donald Trump.
The proposed extension would span from the pipeline’s terminal in Chatham, Virginia, through Pittsylvania County, Virginia, into Rockingham, North Carolina.
Several local and regional environmental groups, including the Charlottesville-based Southern Environmental Law Center and Protect Our Water, Heritage, Rights Coalition, have criticized the MVP and its Southgate extension for encouraging further reliance on natural gas.
The public comment window for MVP Southgate is expected to run from late spring into early summer 2025.
