Orphaned in the midst of UVA Health System construction is a small, 0.7-acre strip of land owned by VAParc LLC. It would seem that the University would want that strip, a parking lot with 63 spaces valued at $1.3 million, to join the construction orgy all around it. Couldn’t UVA use that acreage for, say, a sizeable addition to the parking garage being built just to the lot’s north?
When we asked Jeff Hanna, a University spokesperson, whether UVA had tried to buy the property, he responded by e-mail: “The U.Va. Foundation’s policy is not to discuss publicly matters involving property acquisition.” Calls to VAParc and its attorney were not returned, but in November, the company asked City Council not to let the UVA Foundation close Cochran Street for construction. Council sided with UVA.
