Green Scene will not be throwing a party, hosting a potluck, or organizing a rally on Earth Day, because there are already way too many events for Green Scene to try to attend without adding another one to the mix. If you’re looking for some ideas to pack your Wednesday—and really, your entire week—with eco-friendliness, look no further. I’m going to list all the events I know about and then you, dear readers, are going to add the ones I forgot in the handy Comments section. O.K. Here we go.
Warm up your green muscles by watching a PBS documentary, tonight at 9pm, about pollution in the Chesapeake. It’s called Poisoned Waters and includes interviews with some folks from the PEC. Sounds like you might be questioning your use of deodorant and prescription meds by the end of it. Or, if farming is your pet issue and not water, you can watch the excellent King Corn at 7pm in UVA’s Minor Hall.
Wake up Wednesday morning to another Earth Day and tune your radio to 106.1, where Better World Betty will be broadcasting live from McIntire Recycling Center (don’t you love that)? Go visit her between 10am and noon, and drop off your empties while you’re at it.
Over at UVA, there are a bunch of things going on. They’re all detailed here, but here’s the short version: Farmers market, 9am-2pm, Newcomb Plaza. Exhibits and displays throughout the day, between Minor and Garrett Halls. Demonstration of a computer game that models the Chespeake Bay as a system, 4pm, Harrison Institute Auditorium.
Meanwhile, Downtown, the GreenMatters series wraps up with a big green living and building expo at the Paramount, 10am-3pm, and then a reception from 5 to 8pm. Both are free and, I’m guessing, extremely worth it. Learn about energy efficiency and then eat goodies from Rev Soup.
If your enthusiasm for greenness carries you into the weekend (and why wouldn’t it?) check out a rainwater harvesting workshop on Sunday, 9am-noon. It’s $75 for the course plus a rain barrel to call your own; call 326-2898 for deets. Then head directly over to a Critical Mass bike ride, starting 12:30pm in front of the Old Medical School, and when that’s over, shoot up to Crutchfield to recycle up to three electronic items. You can do that from noon to 4pm.
Then, congratulate yourself on an Earth Week well done.
All right, folks, add whatever green events I forgot. No fair posting your kid’s second-grade play, unless it’s a stage version of "An Inconvenient Truth."
