Charlottesville named second best place to retire

Accolades for Charlottesville just keep on coming. This time, Black Enterprise magazine has announced the “20 Best Places to Retire” and  Charlottesville ranks second, behind Durham, North Carolina.

Ann Arbor, Michigan; Nashville, Tennessee; and Lexington, Kentucky round up the top five.

In establishing the criteria for the ranking, the magazine looked at quality of life, healthcare facilities, taxes, general climate and presence of cultural activities.

Black Enterprise magazine chose Durham as the best place to retire because of its “prestigious educational institutions and world-class medical facilities,” including Duke University and Duke University Hospital.

UVA gets its due as Charlottesville’s No. 1 employer  and because it “provides a variety of opportunities for lifelong learning.” Also mentioned is the African-American Cultural Arts Festival, an institution that “brings visitors to Charlottesville from the region and beyond.”

Rounding out the top 10 are Roswell, Georgia; Columbia, Missouri; Johnson City, Tennessee; Virginia Beach, Virginia; and Indianapolis, Indiana.

Earlier this year, Fortune and Money magazines  ranked the city as the 18th Best City for Living and Launching a Business. Forbes also ranked Charlottesville as the 9th Best Small Market for Business.
