One of the best tools to keep around the house is also one of the simplest. If you’ve moved a framed picture, opened a door too hard, or fallen into the wall while carrying a fireplace poker, you might have damage to your drywall. But if it’s not too extensive, a drywall knife, drywall tape and some spackle is all you need to make the repair. (And some matching paint—or perhaps this is the perfect excuse for a whole new color!)
To cover a small hole, cut a piece of drywall tape that will cover it, and smooth it flat over the damage. This gives you a surface on which to apply the spackle, which you glop on and then smooth out with your trusty drywall knife. (Tip: Clean off the knife between each swipe.)
Let the spackle dry (usually overnight), sand it smooth, and then apply another coat if necessary. Now you’re ready for that fresh coat of paint.
You can find plastic drywall knives, but a metal one will still be inexpensive, and will give much better results.
