Don’t leave an important local structure hanging! According to Preservation Virginia, two of the state’s 10 "Most Endangered Historic Sites" are based in Charlottesville and Albemarle. The first, the 19th century Albemarle County Jail, hosted "the last public hanging in Virginia" in February 1905, when former mayor Sam McCue was convicted in the death of his wife and executed. The second, Morrisena, is a mid-18th century farm house built on land grant property from King George II himself. The Albemarle Charlottesville Historical Society has images of both sites; for the architects out there, C-VILLE recommends the UVA Library’s collection of online notes and images.
