Imagine a world…

Gather ’round, proud citizens of Charlottesville, and hear tell of a golden land that your city leaders have envisioned. Imagine a world where every worker has a well-paying, career-ladder job. Where every student is a success, and learning is lifelong. Where housing is affordable and attainable. In this new shining city, all take part in a thriving scene of arts and culture. An aura of green halos the city instead of smog, and the rivers run clean and healthy. Bikers crowd the roadways, while buses transport happy commuters and every side street is safe from cut-through traffic. Every person is fit—physically and mentally, actively engaged in civic life as Jefferson had once imagined (only better!).

Such a world is that envisioned by City Council, which considered a vision statement at their May 7 meeting full of such pipe dreams. Grandiose ideals are the common stock of vision statements, and so the city is no more ridiculous than your average organization reaching for the stars. But we couldn’t resist the fulsome phrases of the city’s: “Here, an affordable, quality education is cherished as a fundamental right,” or “Our neighborhoods retain a core historic fabric while offering housing that is affordable and attainable for people of all income levels, life stages, and abilities.”

Charlottesville: Celebrate!
