Did WAHS coach provide alcohol?

A young woman from Nelson County has been charged on two counts of contributing to the delinquency of a minor. Alishia Stewart is accused of giving alcohol to a 15-year-old Western Albemarle High School student.

Stewart, 24, is the junior varsity softball coach for WAHS. She is not a teacher at the school.
County police began an investigation May 1 after the student was drunk at school, according to a press release from the police department. Stewart is accused of giving the student alcohol on two occasions. No charges have been filed that indicate she contributed to the delinquency of other students. School officials are not saying whether the student played on the softball team.

Alishia Stewart coached JV softball at Western Albemarle High, but allegedly she provided more than batting tips to the students in her care. Stewart has been arrested for allegedly supplying alcohol to a 15-year-old.

Stewart played softball at Nelson County High School, where she was an All-Region honoree in 2001, a two-time Most Valuable Player and a three-time first team All-District selectee. In college, she played outfield for Longwood University, where she started most games and, in 2005, had a senior batting average of .312.

Stewart has been suspended from her coaching position and administrators are recommending dismissal to the School Board. Diane Behrens, executive director of support services for Albemarle County schools, says a meeting is scheduled for the softball players and their parents to meet a new coach May 7.

The two misdemeanor counts each carry a fine of up to $2,500 and up to a year in jail. Stewart was released on bond May 3; her first court appearance is scheduled for May 14.
Behrens says an acquittal would likely not affect Stewart’s employment status.
