Zeglinski Scores Career-High 25 as Wahoos Defeat Terrapins 74-60

Tony Bennett won the 100th game of his coaching career Saturday afternoon at the Comcast Center with a 74-60 victory over the Maryland Terrapins. The win was Virginia’s first double-digit win at Maryland since 1990-91 season.

Sammy Zeglinski was the best player on the court Saturday as he carved up the Terrapin defense for 25 points. Zeglinski made six of the eight three-point shots he attempted, and was seven of thirteen overall from the field.

Senior Mustapha Farrakhan also played brilliantly for the Hoos as he played well under control while scoring 19.

Assane Sene was a force to be reckoned with in the first-half as he tied his career-high with 15 points. Sene played a tireless 34 minutes as well.

Virginia’s 74 points scored is their highest ACC point-total this season. The Wahoos were up 37-33 at the break.

Both teams were solid from the free-throw line as Maryland was 16/21, and the Hoos shot a respectable 14/18. Maryland blocked Virginia’s shot an incredible 10 times on the afternoon.

Maryland was led by Jordan Williams who scored 17 points as well as swatting six of Virginia’s shots. The Terrapins only played seven guys in their rotation and looked awfully tired down the stretch. Gary Williams (who got a technical foul), pressed Virginia defensively most of the game, but did not come up with the turnovers he expected the press would cause the Wahoos.

Virginia and Maryland both finished the ACC regular-season with a record of seven and nine in conference. The only way either team goes to the NCAA Tournament is with a ACC Tournament championship. The tournament begins Thursday in Greensboro, North Carolina with Duke or North Carolina being the heavy favorites (per usual) to cut down the nets.

Go Hoos!
