Albemarle County appoints Steve Sellers as new chief of police

This afternoon, Albemarle County announced the name of its new police chief. Steve Sellers, who was not present at the press conference, is currently the deputy chief of Fairfax police and a 28-year veteran of the Fairfax County Police Department.

Sellers’ appointment will be effective on Tuesday, January 18. He replaces John Miller, who retired on September 30.

Sellers, who holds an undergraduate degree in Business Administration and a graduate degree in Public Administration both from Virginia Tech, was chosen from among 108 applicants, and was praised by both County Executive Bob Tucker and Board of Supervisor Chair Ann Mallek for his experience and expertise. He is a graduate of the FBI National Academy, a member of the International Association of Chiefs of Police, the Virginia Association of Chiefs of Police and the Major Cities Chiefs Association.

Responsible for helping create the Northern Virginia Regional Intelligence Center after the September 11 terrorist attacks, Sellers also led the Washington Area Sniper Prosecution Taskforce during the prosecution of Lee Malvo and John Muhammad.
