What’s going on this weekend?

A very exciting night in town this evening.

One of the best performances I saw at CMJ in October was by a guy I didn’t even have to leave Charlottesville to enjoy: Esmont native Jonny Corndawg. Where some musicians put on airs, dressing the opposite gender for show or otherwise, Jonny Corndawg seems to really mean all of the strange things he does. He is Jonny Corndawg, and he’s doing his thing. The dude sells his original leatherwork at the merchandise table, propogates false rumors about himself on his website, and his songs are great but a little too bawdy to post here. Corndawg opens for Gene Ween, of the band Ween, tonight at the Jefferson Theater.

Bring a flashlight to Let There Be Light at PVCC, the annual event that celebrates art made with light as the darkest day of the year approaches. Check out our coverage from last year’s. That’s from 6-10pm this evening. And, really, they want you to bring a flashlight.

If you liked Ellen Burstyn’s character in Requiem for a Dream, but wish it had a little dash of Guys and Dolls, then boy, does Live Arts have the play for you. The Drowsy Chaperone, which opens tonight, is a Tony-winning "musical within a comedy" wherein a reclusive Broadway fan imagines a jazz-age Broadway musical coming to life in his living room. Well, I guess that sounds a little bit lighter than Requiem for a Dream after all—but I caught a preview a couple weeks back and it look hilarious.

The Drowsy Chaperone opens tonight at Live Arts. More below.

You’ve also got your pick of holiday themed plays, which continue through the weekend at The Hamner Theater (Two one-acts by Peter Coy in a show called The Gift of the Magi: Then and Now) and Four County Players (The Best Christmas Pageant Ever). Play On!’s got Cinderella. Check out the Theatre Alliance of Central VA’s handy dandy Google calendar here.
