A sophomore UVA student and Haiti native wants to help rebuild her homeland. Ania Turnier started an organization called Building Haiti with the goal of constructing schools in the country devastated by an earthquake in January.
UVA Today reports that the organization will build modular schoolhouses and supply materials. Each schoolhouse will hold 25 to 30 students, and cost roughly $10,000.
"The education system has never been good," Turnier told UVA Today. "It is a serious hindrance to our progression."
For the schools’ design, Building Haiti will work with Initiative reCOVER, an effort of the UVA School of Architecture directed by Professor Anselmo Canfora. Other partners include Fondation Unibank, ATP2, LLC, and Muci Foundation for the construction of the schools. Food for the Poor and Maison Henri Deschamps will assist with the schools’ management.
