Is St. Pat’s the greenest holiday of all?

We came back from our trip to New Orleans with an insight that will surprise no one: That city knows how to party. Mostly, we weren’t even trying to find parties—they kept finding us. Saturday, we walked out of a restaurant where we’d just eaten breakfast and ran into this:

A St. Patrick’s Day parade! Woo hoo. Those guys on the float are doing what any parading person in New Orleans is, it seems, legally obligated to do, whether it’s Mardi Gras or not: They are throwing beads to the crowd.

Not all the beads are caught.

In fact, this parade was kind of a nightmare from an ecological standpoint.

(That is not a recycling bin.)

However, sometimes the occasion demands that one put away one’s schoolmarmish tendencies and get in the party mood with everybody else.

I mean, how can you argue with that?
