In case you thought the Grammys were it, another awards ceremony has come and gone this weekend. This time, it was the Miss America pageant, which was won by a 22-year-old Fredricksburg native and VCU student named Caressa Cameron.
During the events performance portion, Cameron nailed “Listen,” a Beyoncé track from the Dreamgirls soundtrack, making good on her signature talent (“vocal pop”). The new Miss America will take her $50,000 prize and take a year off from school to campaign and fundraise for AIDS awareness. IHOP announced yesterday that Cameron would be their spokesperson for its National Pancake Day Celebration—a fundraiser for children’s hospital programs.
Her most frequently quoted line from the interview portion seems to be: "We need to get our kids back outside, playing with sticks in the street like I did when I was little." Spoken like a true activist!
