The Nice Jenkins get year-end “Best Album” props

It’s a proud day when a local rock band rubs shoulders with the likes of Fleet Foxes and Beck. The music website Indie Rock Cafe features a banner on the right side of its homepage that lists, in alphabetical order, the site’s "Best 2008 Albums." (Different from, say, "Best 2,008 albums.) Immediately above Jack White’s other rock act The Raconteurs is our very own The Nice Jenkins and its recent record Elephant Twisters, which I wrote quite favorably about here.

It makes a local music blogger proud to see an album with so many Charlottesville connections (album art by artist/Invisible Hand member Thomas Dean, recorded in Esmont by Roderick Coles) hit the radar of a California-based music blog. And they’re not entirely alone. Titus Andronicus, whose album The Airing of Grievances also appears, has a few local ties: Band member Andrew Cedermark used to write for The Declaration at UVA.

I’d hate to see a load of excellent local musicians get their due. What other local acts topped your lists in 2008?

"Face rock" reaches the national scene! The Nice Jenkins score a few points for Elephant Twisters.
