16-year-old in critical condition

A 16-year-old Charlottesville High School student is in critical condition after a shooting that occurred around 11pm, March 2, on Prospect Avenue. It has been reported that the teen was an innocent bystander who was shot by a semi-automatic weapon. A dark truck or SUV was seen leaving the scene.

March 7, police arrested a 17-year-old male, charging him with conspiracy to commit malicious wounding, use of a firearm in a felony and participating in a criminal street gang. A 16-year-old male was arrested and charged with accessory after the fact in a malicious wounding.

The Daily Progress reported the 17-year-old was one of the teens responsible for an April 2006 incident in which two teens were lured off the Downtown Mall and beaten by a group of kids purporting to be “Bloods.” Though the other suspects were convicted in that case, this 17-year-old was found incompetent to stand trial in Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court and was allowed back on the streets, reports the Progress. Prosecutors could try him as an adult in the recent shooting.

Police are also looking for a third suspect: Pee Wee Carmello Martinez is wanted on malicious wounding charges in the shooting this month.
