Your tax dollars, at work

Job title: Recreation program supervisor. Smith organizes, plans and implements everything from summer camp to sports leagues.

Has worked for the county for: 15 years

Resides in:
Albemarle County

Best of times: The middle school sports program’s track meet at Walton Middle School. “Getting 300 kids together and having it all happen by sunset —that’s good.”

Worst of times: “I’m sure this is everyone’s answer right now, but cutting the budget.”

Amy Smith

Strangest moment on the job: “Every year we organize a big Easter egg hunt with the city. Hundreds of eggs scattered all over the place, and hundreds of kids. Once [the kids] are set in motion, the eggs are gone in five minutes. One year, one of the kids was so excited he clapped really loud. Apparently all the other kids thought this meant it was time to go. Once they were going, it was impossible to stop them.”

If she were a superhero, she’d be: The Flash. “Being able to get from A to B to C really fast would help keep everything going smoothly.”
