When we stacked up all of this year’s Grammy nominees, it looked like there was no way music with local ties would escape unfeted. But alas.
- The Infamous Stringdusters, serial curators of The Festy who recorded their latest disc locally lost the Best Country Music Instrumental Performance category to Marty Stuart.
- Tim Reynolds and Dave Matthews lost the Best Rock Instrumental Performance category to Jeff Beck.
- Mary Chapin Carpenter’s The Age of Miracles was passed over in the Best Contemporary Folk Album; God Willin’ & The Creek Don’t Rise by Ray LaMontagne And The Pariah Dogs won.
- Judith Shatin’s career spanning disc, Tower of the Eight Winds, performed by the Borup-Ernst Duo, helped nominate Blanton Alspaugh for Classical Producer of the Year. He lost to David Frost, who left the ceremony with three.
Some other interesting notes: Poor Eminem walked away with only two of the 10 awards for which he was nominated; Lady Gaga showed up in a giant egg and emerged with "shoulder horns"; and the Arcade Fire won Album of the Year for The Suburbs.
