When it comes to the World Cup, it’s not all fun and games. At least, not in the sense that the event promotes a casual atmosphere. Says McGrady’s Irish Pub owner Scott Roth, customers at his Preston Avenue restaurant have been really getting into the quadrennial FIFA event by cheering, hollering and generally noising up the joint. Not that Roth minds. He says game days have been “rowdy, in a good way”—especially the U.S. games.
“We had tremendous support for it,” he says. He expects the crowds to swell for the last few games.
Not located near Preston? You’ve got other options if you’re interested in sharing the final game on July 11 with kindred spirits. Wild Wing Café, Maya and Zinc (all on West Main and Timberwood Grill (off 29N) and Trinity Irish Pub (on University Avenue) have special hours and food. Plus, Shebeen (on Ridge-McIntire Road) actually brought in extra TVs specifically for World Cup viewing. We don’t know which of the remaining four teams will go all the way, but do know this: When it comes to cuisine, nothing quite whets the whistle like a fresh empanada. Or schnitzel. Or even a bowl of tapioca. Now we see why competition is so fierce!
Coffee buzz
Too tired in the morning to even grab yourself a cup of coffee? JJ SunDance is about to have that covered. Cville CoffeeNinja, a new coffee delivery service, should be up and running by the middle of this month. SunDance says he’s just working on finding the right vehicle, but the response so far has been “kinda nuts.” The CoffeeNinja’s total business plan has yet to be revealed, but, to be honest, would we expect anything other than stealth from a true ninja?
Fire at Rev Soup
A mop stored next to the hot water heater at Revolutionary Soup’s Downtown location caught fire last week. There was limited damage, reports Fire Chief Charles Werner, but the location was closed for ventilation and repairs.

Leroy says his business provides advice on all sectors of the food industry—restaurants, catering, grocery stores, schools and even private residences. He’ll train staff, help keep costs down and even design menus.
Currently, he’s working out of Charlottesville—where he’s already helping “a couple of places,” he says—but his services extend to Richmond and Lynchburg.
