Where the heart is

“‘Home’ is sitting on the countertop while your husband cooks eggs in the morning,” she says. “It is the giggling you hear in the hallway when you chase and tickle your 2-year-old. ‘Home’ is clipping fresh basil from the garden and brewing afternoon tea on a sunny day.”

So when the Waken Creative Studio founder moved from Houston, Texas, with her husband and son in July 2020, they made sure to look for a place that would help them make memories. They landed in the Barracks Rugby neighborhood in a three-bedroom, two-bathroom 1920s Colonial Revival bungalow. Wilson fell in love with the arched doorways.

Since moving in, the living room has become the small family’s favorite spot: Flooded with natural light through its original pane windows, it features a view of trees and climbing ivy on the house’s exterior.

What it comes down to, Wilson says, is that home is more of a feeling. “It’s a place to build the sweet moments of your life with your most precious people.”
