When snowstorms attack: Possible 4″ to 6″ accumulation tonight

The National Weather Service has spoken! The next day may bring anywhere from 4" to 6" of new snow, likely to the dismay of many local drivers and anyone who has hefted a shovel in the name of clear sidewalks recently.

Charlottesville schools have canceled evening classes and extracurricular activities, and Albemarle County schools remain closed today. The Albemarle County Planning Commission meeting scheduled for tonight has been postponed until next week, bumping agendas one week off—those of you planning to speak about the proposed rezoning of 30 acres from Rural Area to Planned Development Industrial Park in the UVA Research Park will have to bide your time until next Tuesday, February 9.

The seven-day forecast makes the end of the week look like snow, too, with chances of precipitation hitting 60 percent on Friday, reaching 90 percent on Friday evening and sticking around 80 percent on Saturday.

On a related note, ever heard the expression "Up the creek without a paddle"? Locals will do well to find a friend with a shovel; the Daily Progress Twitter account reports that five local stores, including Kmart, Walmart and Martin’s Hardware, are currently out of snow shovels.
