“What’s NOT Working in Our Community?” proclaimed the handout for Saturday morning’s session hosted by the Charlottesville/Albemarle Commission on Children and Families.
Maryfrances Porter, the Commission’s research and planning coordinator, encouraged the 10 or so residents in attendance at the County Office Building to air their grievances in order to help the city and county understand how to improve services. “What kinds of things are people needing right now?” she asked.
The citizens, most of them women, provided her with a quiver full of complaints. Some of their greatest concerns included a lack of recreational activities for disabled children as well as broader needs like a greater frequency of bus stops.
Porter scrawled their words down on giant white Post-It notes and stuck them to the walls. “We really appreciate your input and contribution to this project,” Porter said, “and you can look forward to the actual report coming out in early summer.”
