Everybody’s visiting with mom this weekend, but things haven’t lurched to a halt. Sink your teeth into spring with a trip just south of town to Rapunzel’s, which hosts a couple of solid local acts this weekend: Carl Anderson, who has been hitting the local circuit hard since the release of a recent EP. Or if your thirst for Q*Black wasn’t slaked by Ocean Black’s set opening for Snoop Dogg at the Jefferson Theater, the IllVille Crew host a Saturday night of good clean fun. Details are here.
Also this weekend at the Southern: Local native Mariana Bell releases a strong new CD on Sunday (read about it here), and the genre-bending cellist Ben Sollee headlines Saturday.
If it feels like there’s not a lot going on this weekend, it may be because some of the organizations that keep the community’s wheels turning all seem to be hosting major fundraisers over the next week. Here’s a quick roundup:
- The Bridge/PAI hosts its annual REVEL fundraiser. A $55 entry gets you into the main event, which features a silent art auction (bidding starts at $5 for Billy Hunt Private Detective Services: Need a private investigator, but don’t need some one qualified? Billy Hunt’s your man) and tunes by We Are Star Children. When 11pm rolls around, $10 gets you into the afterparty. Details are here.
- The arts patronage org Virginia Center for Creative Arts also hosts its annual fundraiser, this year in celebration of its 40th anniversary. Saturday night’s party at the Casa Maria gardens in Greenwood and features "cocktails, dinner, dancing and an art auction." Tickets are $250 and can be bought here.
- Tickets to Wednesday’s Piedmont Council for the Arts fundraiser, called Spring for the Arts, are $35 for members and $50 for nonmembers. That event also features an art auction, a veritable smorgasbord of performances—from Avery Lawrence to belly dancing to Klezmer music—and bourbon pairings(!). Details are here.
- Bonus: The African-American Teaching Fellows of Charlottesville-Albemarle also host an art auction next Saturday night, May 14, this one at Thomas Jefferson Memorial Church, that includes work from a range of local artists for a range of prices. Go.
