Virginia’s six-year master plan for road improvements and maintenance may get its newest round of budget cuts. Commonwealth transportation officials are voting today on $893 million in cuts.
The Associated Press reports that these reductions, added to the four others, amount to $4.6 billion, closely resembling a year’s revenue.
"So what we are being asked to do when you vote tomorrow is to run a six-year program on five years of revenue," said Transportation Secretary Pierce Homer to the Commonwealth Transportation Board, which met yesterday.
According to the story, the Virginia Department of Transportation has already laid off 450 employees and is readying to add 1,000 more at the beginning of the new year.
