School’s out for the summer, but Charlottesville’s investment in education continues. In a June 5 statement, the University of Virginia announced a $43.4 million gift to its School of Education and Human Development to support the creation of a local early childhood learning center.
The donation is the largest in the education school’s history. Official community and organization partnerships were not announced at press time, but plans for the center include a potential sliding tuition scale and space for more than 100 students.
The gift is the latest donation from UVA alums Kathleen and David LaCross.
“Providing high-quality educational and developmental experiences at the youngest ages sets children up for success in school and in life,” said Kathleen LaCross at the June 5 announcement. “David and I are proud … to support an initiative that promises to positively impact children and their families, educators, the Charlottesville community, and [UVA].”

The University of Virginia and North Carolina State scrapped plans for a football season opener in Brazil, with the first game of 2026-27 returning to Scott Stadium.
According to June 3 statements from UVA and NC State, the Brazil game was canceled after the game’s promoter, Athlete Advantage, told the ACC and schools “the event could not be conducted.”
College Football Brasil, which was promoting the matchup as “the first CFB game in South America,” was advertising the event on social media as recently as May 18.
At press time, the game is expected, but not confirmed, to take place on August 29.
Fans who purchased tickets or travel packages through College Football Brasil’s website will receive refunds, according to the group’s website.
