Two local men arrested, charged in David Lee Cowan shooting

Two weeks after 30-year-old David Lee Cowan was fatally injured in a shooting near the Westhaven public housing development, the Charlottesville Police Department announced a pair of arrests linked to the case. City police arrested Jermaine Antron Mulford, 27, and Whitmore Arnold Merrick, Jr., 28, in connection with Cowan’s death. Both Mulford and Merrick are charged with attempted malicious wounding, firearm use and maliciously shooting at an occupied building. Merrick, a convicted felon, faces an additional charge for firearm possession.

Charlottesville police report that both Mulford and Merrick were arrested at their homes this morning, with assistance from the Albemarle County Police Department and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms. Investigations remain ongoing, according to city police, who offered no additional comment. For background, read here. Click here for a memorial page for Cowan.
