The Thomas Jefferson Area Coalition for the Homeless (TJACH) recorded a homeless census [Microsoft Word document] for the sixth straight year, and the count keeps going up. On January 30, the census found 292 homeless people in Charlottesville, with a majority residing in emergency transitional or permanent supportive facilities. Of those, 231 were adults with 46 dependent children, twice the number of kids recorded last year. All in all, this year’s count is double that recorded in 2003. Of the 292, 69 percent were male. The average age was 41.
