The local Sierra Club supports Biscuit Run becoming state park

The Piedmont group of the Sierra Club has sent a letter to the State Secretary of Natural Resources, L. Preston Bryant, Jr. to express their support for Biscuit Run becoming a state park.

The 1,200-acre parcel is rumored to be soon donated to the State of Virginia as parkland.

Biscuit Run is the largest residential development proposed in county history (rezoning approved in 2007) with 3,100 units planned and 150,000 square feet of commercial space.

“The Piedmont Group strongly supports the preservation of greenspace and natural ecosystems in central Virginia.  We believe a state park at Biscuit Run will be an asset to the Charlottesville community by conserving biological resources and providing outdoor recreational activities,” write Tom Olivier, the club’s conservation chair and John Cruickshank, chair.

“Although Biscuit Run was approved as the site for a large residential development, the approval was granted without a) any determination of whether the increased population size was consistent with community sustainability or b) whether the development was consistent with protection of important biological resources that exist in nearby rural areas.  For these reasons, the Piedmont Group strongly opposed approval of the Biscuit Run development proposal.”
