Well, peops, I know you know what today is. Birth Day? No. Mirth Day? No! It’s Earth Day! Happy Earth Day to you!
Oddly, I know of no specific Earth Day events happening today in Charlottesville. (If I’m missing something, put ‘er in the comments!) The Eco-Fair is history. But there’s plenty going on this weekend and into next week. Here’s what’s on the menu.
Saturday, there’s a Celebration on the Rockfish, at which all those who bravely journey to Howardsville can join in river and roadside cleanups, check out eco-friendly exhibitors, and nosh some free lunch. BYOC: that’s canoe, my friends. It’s all in honor of the Virginia Scenic River program and, to my way of thinking, sounds extremely pleasant. Call 263-7015 to register; the party runs 9am-5pm.
Sunday, you have a busy day. At 1pm you’re over at Ivy Creek Natural Area for Natural History Day, which likely involves a walk in the woods and is paired with a native plant sale. Tear yourself away from those wild ginger seedlngs and get yourself downtown to The Haven by 6pm: First there’s a local food and wine tasting, then there’s a screening of the film The Garden (7pm), then there’s a discussion with local community garden advocates (8:30pm). No dance party scheduled, but you can start one, I’m sure. Regardless, you’ll need tickets.
What’s that? All you want to do is take a hike and not talk to anyone? Shenandoah National Park is free this whole week, through Sunday. Go forth and ruminate.
On a related note, Architecture Week begins tomorrow night. Another edition of the fabulous Olio series kicks off the week (7pm at the CCDC) and from there you’ve got a full schedule of design charettes, film screenings, lectures and site tours. A lot of this is sure to be eco-minded, so put on your green suspenders and come on down.
Me? I’ll probably be home, actually, working in the garden and observing the chickens. More on that soon.
