Storm affects power for 16,000 Charlottesville and Albemarle residents

The city has released a series of closures as a result of the storm. Among them, there will be no bus service on JPA, West Main Street, 14th Street and parts of Park Street.

According to a news release by the Virginia Transportation Department, the intersections of Route 29 at Hydraulic Road and Route 250 at State Farm Boulevard are without traffic signals.
 
"Some neighborhood streets in the Georgetown Road area are blocked by equipment being used by utility and VDOT crews that are working to remove fallen utility lines, clear trees and other debris from the roads and restore power. Motorists are advised to avoid that area if possible," reads the release.

According to Dominion Power’s outage map, 9,436 Charlottesville residents and 7,356 Albemarle County residents lost power or were affected during yesterday’s storm.

A press release from the city notes that recreation centers will operate on their normal schedules for any residents without power, and the Herman Key Recreation Center will open at 11am. Additionally, while Charlottesville Area Transit will operate today, there will be no service to Jefferson Park Avenue, West Main Street, 14th Street and portions of Park Street.

Crozet and Earlysville Fire Departments are headed to Charlottesville to assist in clean-up efforts, according to City Fire Chief Charles Werner. The chief added that trees are down in McIntire, Washington and Pen parks, at least five are reported on houses, and one fell across railroad tracks near McIntire Park.
