Stop the presses!

The Daily Progress ceased all printing operations at its W. Rio Road facility last week, canning 25 workers in the process. The local daily immediately started rolling out of a Hanover County press where the Richmond Times-Dispatch has been printed. Both papers are owned by Richmond-based Media General, which also owns the press and is in the midst of cutbacks to counteract declines in revenue.

The decision raises the question: Will the paper continue to occupy this building? Publisher Lawrence McConnell says there are no plans to move. But after all, The Daily Progress moved to Rio Road from Market Street 25 years ago for a larger building with room for the printing press. It remains to be seen whether the tightened operation will need that much space on land assessed at $2.5 million.
