Commonwealth’s Attorney Denise Lunsford announced today that state will not pursue charges against Stacy Berry due to new evidence.
In a press release, these new developments are said to potentially impact the Commonwealth’s ability to successfully and fairly prosecute the case.
Berry was charged with the murder of 23-year-old Travis Scott on Wednesday, September 17 at the U-Heights apartments. Scott’s shooting death was the first homicide this year in Albemarle.
According to the Daily Progress, on Thursday, September 18, an Albemarle police arrest warrant for Maricus Antwan Rawlings stated that he attempted “to rob Stacy Berry of drugs by means of violence …”
Today’s statement says that while Lunsford stresses that police were completely justified in bringing the charge on second degree murder, the recent developments have caused a close reexamination of the case.
Stacy Lamont Berry, a 20-year-old county resident, was charged with murder in the death of Travis Scott, but the State will not pursue the case.
