Small Bites: This week's restaurant news

A dance floor for the displaced
So, a few weeks ago, we broke it to Escafé-lovers that the popular late-night spot would close by the end of the year. Then last week, we reported that Will Richey will be opening The Whiskey Jar in its place. Now, we have word of a new late-night bar and dance floor. Al Hamraa, the Moroccan restaurant in the IX building, will host a DJed dance party called “Sundown at the IX” every Friday and Saturday night from 10pm to 2am. Lace up those dancing shoes—the party gets started this Friday.

Shake up your gift giving
For those on your list who like savory and spice better than sugar and spice, consider a gift box of locally made Palcha dressings. Eileen Park’s Korean-American dressings —also found at Anderson Carriage Food House, Blue Ridge Country Store, C’ville Market, Foods of all Nations, The Happy Cook, Rebecca’s, Virginia Shop, and Whole Foods—double as marinades and do Far Eastern wonders to everything from tofu to spinach. The $18.69 gift box contains one bottle of Soycha, one bottle of Chilicha (hot, hot, hot!), and a recipe booklet for inspiration. Pay no shipping until January 1 at palcha.myshopify.com.

Seize the donuts at Calvino Café
Calvino Café, the Main Street Market coffee shop with a host of its own addictive goodies, has added freshly fried plain and cinnamon sugar Carpe Donuts to their temptations for $1.25 a pop. Or, check in on Calvino’s Facebook page to find out when they’re running a $3 breakfast special, which splits the donut, fills it with ham and cheddar, and grills it. Now, that’s a breakfast to champion.

Staunton Grocery to close
Ian Boden’s farm-to-fork restaurant, Staunton Grocery, will close December 23 after five years of feeding diners expertly prepared and locally-sourced food. The restaurant is offering a 50 percent discount on both on- and off-premise bottles of wine during its remaining 10 days.
