Small Bites: This week's restaurant news

 Marco!…
At tavola on Monday, April 23, a night when the busy Italian eatery usually takes a well-deserved night off, you’ll find the space transformed into an Asian restaurant for a one-night-only pop-up called, most appropriately, Marco Polo. There are no reservations—just come between 6pm and 9pm for an à la carte menu that pays tribute to Asian cooking in all its forms, and donates proceeds to Children, Youth and Family Services.

Corner dogs
The owner of Slice in Barracks Road Shopping Center, Vinny Mastellone’s “cornering” the market on another fast food essential. He’s opened Big Dawgs at 14th Street on the Corner and is doing what he’s always wanted to do —fries and inexpensive dogs (two for $5), either steamed or grilled, and served late on warm, soft buns. Good thing that’s exactly what we want too.

Turkish delight
29 North just past the intersection of Rio Road is an unlikely location for Charlottesville’s first Turkish restaurant, but Sultan Kebab—opened in part by former GM at The Clifton Inn, Deniz Dikmen—has been serving up authentic dishes like lahmacun (that’s a crispy Turkish pizza covered with ground beef, vegetables, and spices), hummus casserole, dolma, kofte, and kebabs (from adana to doner) from that very spot for three weeks now. It’s open every day for dine-in or carry-out from 11am to 9pm and serves homemade Turkish baklava and that addictively strong Turkish coffee or tea for those wanting an after-dinner pick-me-up. Sounds like a meal fit for a sultan.
