Nelson County is Beer County
Friday marked the opening of Wild Wolf Brewing Company (Nelson County’s third brewery) on Route 151. Mother and son team Mary and Danny Wolf grew out of their home brewing digs and have set up shop in a landmark building on five acres that include tobacco barns-come-boutiques. With an outdoor “Biergarten,” 16 brews on tap and a former chef from Staunton Grocery cooking up local fare (including fried chicken), you’ll be set for the whole day—or weekend.
Eating off the silver screen
He may have sought shelter from fame and notoriety in unassuming strip malls and generically-named Chinese joints, but Peter Chang is certainly getting his 15 minutes of fame. Producer and director Stanley Tucci, who’s starred in culinary behemoths such as Big Night and Julie & Julia, is producing a film about Peter Chang’s peripatetic lifestyle. Taking Ang Lee’s Eat Drink Man Woman as a cue, the movie is bound to make us hungry—and proud to call Chang our own.

Two Charlottesville chefs and a winemaker are taking on the big city this season by cooking for New York’s James Beard House —the non-profit foundation that sponsors the food and wine world’s version of the Oscars every year. Zinc’s executive chef, Justin Hershey, will cook alongside Robert Einhorn of Terrapin Restaurant in Virginia Beach on Tuesday, November 29. On January 30, Peter Chang cooks while Jefferson Vineyards’ winemaker Andy Reagan pours wines to match—or, shall we say, to extinguish Chang’s fiery Sichuan dishes.
A charitable cup o’ Joe
Esmeralda coffee has been rated one of the top coffees in the world for seven years and Dave Fafara, owner of Shenandoah Joe, is among the handful of roasters in the nation able to get it. On Friday at his Preston Avenue location, Fafara will roast one 25-pound batch of it with plans to sell 18 one-pound bags (each priced at about $55) and sample out the rest to customers from 6am until it’s out. All proceeds from the sale go to Toy Lift.
